Contracts are everyone's business: The next chapter for Luminance

Eleanor Lightbody

Contracts are strategic assets, and the intelligence inside them shapes how every part of the business operates, sells, spends, delivers, partners, and grows. They define commercial commitments, operational responsibilities, risk, and opportunity.

Yet much of that intelligence has too often remained locked in documents, scattered across systems, or accessible only when someone has the time to search for it.

AI has changed what is possible.

Contracts can become a living source of business insight understood in context, connected across the enterprise, and put to work at a scale that humans and manual processes cannot support.

This is Contract Intelligence. Contract Intelligence turns the content, context, and history of contracts into actionable business intelligence. It helps teams understand what has been agreed, identify what matters, and act on what should happen next.

It is the next chapter for Luminance and a new way for enterprises to put their contracts to work. By turning contractual knowledge into actionable intelligence, we help Legal, Finance, Procurement, Sales, and every team in between understand what matters, manage risk, move faster, and unlock greater commercial value – with the confidence to make better decisions and act decisively.

From managing contracts to Contract Intelligence

Contracts have always contained intelligence about how businesses operate. What has been missing is a practical way to understand and activate that intelligence at enterprise scale.

Contract lifecycle management brought structure to agreements, workflows, and the contracting process.

Legal AI brought new ways to understand complex contractual language, support legal analysis, and help lawyers work faster across the lifecycle.

These were important steps forward. They improved how individuals worked and helped Legal teams become more efficient. But individual productivity, even when it compounds across a department, is only part of the opportunity.

The greater opportunity is to make the intelligence within contracts accessible across the enterprise – to help teams work from shared context, make better decisions, and act with greater confidence. This is where contract knowledge begins to create measurable impact: protecting revenue, managing risk, capturing commercial opportunity, and supporting growth.

Our ambition is to move from storing contracts to understanding them, to using that understanding to drive decisions and action across the enterprise.

Contract Intelligence builds on that foundation by connecting contractual understanding to the decisions and actions of the wider business, providing organizations with a way to understand what contracts mean, what they require and what they make possible.

That requires both depth and breadth; the depth to understand complex contractual language in context: the obligations, decisions and relationships that give each contract meaning; and the breadth to make that understanding available across the functions and decisions those contracts shape.

This is the bigger picture for Luminance – turning contracts from static documents into an active intelligence layer for the enterprise – and bringing a distinct foundation to market.

That shift is also reflected in Luminance’s new visual identity. It moves us from static, document-led systems to a world in motion – where enterprises learn from their contracts, contracts learn from the enterprise, and intelligence moves through the business to drive better decisions and outcomes.

It brings Contract Intelligence to life as something that develops over time: the enterprise learns from its contracts, while each new negotiation, decision, and obligation adds context to the organization’s institutional memory.

Born out of the University of Cambridge, we have spent more than a decade developing specialist AI for the complexity of contracts. We began by helping lawyers analyze vast volumes of contractual information. We then applied that intelligence across the lifecycle, from creation and negotiation through to post-execution analysis and action.

That contractual depth gives Luminance the foundation to extend Contract Intelligence across the enterprise. Trusted by more than 1,000 organizations worldwide, Luminance turns contractual knowledge into action – from accelerating review and negotiation to managing obligations, reducing risk and protecting commercial value across the business.

Turning contractual knowledge into business action

Intelligence alone is not simply knowing more, or the end goal. Its value lies in knowing what matters, when it matters, and what to do next.

Contracts provide the source of understanding. AI connects and interprets that knowledge. Agentic automation can then coordinate workflows, validate results, surface risks and opportunities, and help move work forward.

When AI understands the context behind an organization’s contracts, it can proactively surface what matters and turn intelligence into action. Risks can be addressed before they become exposure. Commercial opportunities can be captured rather than missed. Obligations can be acted on, while advanced automation makes new levels of analysis and action possible.

Intelligence across the enterprise

Making contract intelligence available across the enterprise does not mean making everyone a lawyer. It means giving the right people governed access to the intelligence they need, while preserving Legal’s standards, oversight, confidentiality and control.

Contract Intelligence extends the value of Legal expertise across the organization. It gives teams a shared understanding of what has been agreed, what is required and what is possible – without asking them to interpret complex legal language on their own.

With Luminance’s Contract Intelligence platform, authorized teams can ask questions across their contract portfolios, identify exposure, surface obligations, find commercial opportunities and act on exceptions before they become problems.

Finance can understand commitments and exposure. Procurement can see supplier obligations, renewals and dependencies. Sales can access the contractual context needed to negotiate and move deals forward. Operations can act on what contracts require. Compliance can identify risk and accountability. Leadership can make decisions that reflect what the organization has already agreed.

The value of this shared intelligence grows over time. The intelligent enterprise builds on what it already knows every time a contract is signed, a negotiation begins, or a decision is made.

Every contract adds to the bigger picture, turning decisions and rationale into institutional knowledge that compounds, circulates to the people who need it, and enables AI to act on understanding – keeping contracts, decisions, and opportunities moving forward.

That institutional memory includes negotiated positions, accepted risks, approvals, obligations and relationships. Capturing it means teams do not have to start from scratch every time a contract is reviewed, renegotiated or acted upon.

This is how contractual knowledge becomes usable action: helping the enterprise make better decisions and keep work moving. Luminance has built the intelligence layer that makes this possible.

What this means for Legal

For Legal, Contract Intelligence creates greater capacity and reach.

Legal remains responsible for setting standards, managing risk, and applying judgment where complexity demands it. Contract Intelligence helps extend those standards across the enterprise, so teams can act on approved contractual knowledge without every commercial question having to pass through Legal.

As AI takes on repeatable analysis, monitoring and workflow execution, lawyers gain more capacity for the work where their expertise matters most: navigating ambiguity, advising the business, negotiating effectively, and making high-value judgments.

The future is not Legal stepping away from contracts. Legal expertise becomes more powerful when it can be applied at a greater scale, with human judgment remaining central to navigating ambiguity, material risk, and complex commercial decisions.

The future we’re building

Contract Intelligence is a new category for a new era of enterprise AI.

It brings together contract understanding, portfolio intelligence, and agentic automation so enterprises can move from finding information to using it in decisions and workflows.

It moves contracts from static records to connected sources of insight. It moves organizations from searching for information to acting on understanding. And it moves AI from helping individuals complete tasks to helping businesses improve decisions, outcomes, and performance.

This is the future Luminance is building: an enterprise where every contract becomes more valuable as it is used, adding to the organization’s understanding, allowing intelligence to compound over time, and helping teams act on what their contracts make possible.

Our mission is to create a future where every enterprise learns from its contracts, as contracts learn from the enterprise.
