17 February 22 | Luminance, the world’s most advanced AI for document review and legal process automation, today announced that its AI has now been exposed to more than 100 million documents in over 80 different languages.

AI-generated language models are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their ability to understand the written word. Establishing an understanding of a diverse range of parameters is of critical importance when building language models, since the scale and variation of datasets that the technology is exposed to will ultimately define the quality of output. Indeed, building neural networks at scale requires vast data flows: Luminance has now seen and analysed over 100 million documents across hugely diverse fields of law, from Non-Disclosure Agreements and property leases, to emails and WhatsApp messages. This makes Luminance the most advanced language model accessible to lawyers today.

Luminance’s AI technology is also learning from the interactions between humans and the documents, further refining its understanding of the nuances and areas of interest to lawyers. By learning from every NDA or supplier agreement negotiated within Luminance, every obscurely worded clause that causes an M&A transaction to fall apart, and every piece of data that is culled during eDiscovery, lawyers can be confident that no potential risks, anomalies or contentious issues are missed when drafting and reviewing documents either pre- or post-execution.

Launched into the market in 2016, Luminance now has more than 400 customers in 60 countries worldwide. This includes a quarter of the world’s largest law firms such as White & Case, Slaughter and May and Holland & Knight, all of the ‘Big Four’ consultancy firms and multinational organisations including Tesco and Ferrero. The technology is used to augment the spectrum of legal matters, from automatically taking a first pass review of any incoming contract to conducting regulatory compliance reviews and AI-powered ECA. Last year, Luminance became the first use of AI at London’s top criminal court, the Old Bailey, when it was used by a defence team to analyse thousands of pages of evidence ahead of a high-profile murder trial.
