Legal AI is changing, but not in the way many expected. The first wave was about acceleration, about reviewing contracts faster, drafting more quickly and clearing backlogs. The next wave is about something more fundamental: building systems that understand context, retain history and contribute to decision making over time. 

That shift, from tactical assistant to reasoning partner, is what defines the next era of legal AI. 

When speed is no longer enough 

Speed matters. Legal teams are under pressure, volumes are increasing and expectations are rising across the business. Despite this, most lawyers will tell you that the real challenge is not reviewing contracts faster or clearing through business queries. It is navigating nuance, balancing risk and aligning decisions with commercial priorities.
