I really think that AI is an evolution that we all started with some fear. Then there was recognition and acceptance that it’s here to stay, and now there’s excitement around it.

What can it do for us? One of the great things about Luminance is that it’s really going to enable and empower all of our businesses—not just our legal team—to engage in contract development and document management. That’s been really exciting for us as a company.

We’re a small but nimble legal team, and we really want to empower our businesses to use the tool as they’re negotiating as well. I think that evolution of AI throughout the business has been a huge benefit.

One of the best features of Luminance is the Traffic Light Analysis. It’s really cool and very easy to use. My team loves it.

It’s such an easy visual: here are the clauses we don’t need to worry about, here are the ones we should take a look at, and here are the ones that are no-go. They love it.

They think it speeds up their efficiency. Their document review is cut in half, if not more, and it means we can focus on the important aspects. I’m a huge fan.

The great thing about Luminance is the contract repository is not just a repository. It allows us to flag key agreements, keep track of key dates, and store things in different categories. That’s great because adoption is developing across different business lines.

Different teams can have access to different areas of the program, which has been amazing. Our HR team, for instance, with highly sensitive documents, can have their own area, while our real estate or commercial teams can have theirs.

That’s been really great, and the interactiveness of it and the ability to rely on it to manage our contracts has been terrific.

I think the vision for Luminance at Staples really centres around having as many teams using it as possible.

Not only do we have a central place where all of our key agreements are stored, but people are using the tool and benefiting from its AI, its ability to manage contracts, and its help with negotiations. It just makes everybody more efficient and effective.

As we adopt the tool, you can see people are talking the same language and really understanding how our contracts work across the company—which ultimately will save us money.
