“Luminance is far above the competition.”

If you have any experience with AMD as a company, you’ll know that we are heavily invested in artificial intelligence.

The desire of our CEO, Doctor Lisa Su, is that as an AI company, we look for opportunities to actually bring AI into the company.

As the one of the lawyers in the legal department who was tasked with looking for opportunities for AI in our department as a commercial lawyer, I said to wouldn’t it be great we could find a tool that could actually mark-up contracts, review contracts, analyse contracts, summarise contracts, classify contracts.

We started looking at various, various tools and reading Gartner reports and whatnot. We did look at probably three or four, maybe five Auto Mark-Up-type tools and Luminance was far, by far above the competition. We felt that this is partner that we think we can work with.

Probably 85% of the agreements that are done at AMD are going through my team. It’s a lot of content, it’s a lot of work.

I have a small but mighty team, smaller than you would think, handling 2,500 NDAs and probably 3 or 400 commercial agreements. We needed something that would help us do that work faster, review those contracts, highlight risk areas and ultimately, the Holy Grail is actually bringing in an agreement and marking it up in a way similar to how an experienced lawyer might do.

The other thing is I just have sheer volume. Like I said, we do probably 2,400 NDAs per year. And the goal is to be able to say, any third-party NDA that comes in, it just goes through Luminance.

Let Luminance do the first mark-up to take some of the work that is commodity-based work. Let the AI do the first mark-up. Let the AI identify the issues that we know are there all the time. And then let the lawyer or the paralegal do the high value negotiation.

What are my future plans for Luminance? There a joke in my organization that I think Luminance is magic. And every time we are faced with an opportunity or a challenge, I say…why can’t Luminance do that?

We have 25,000 engineers and those engineers are going out and licensing software and they are sending their $1,500 software licenses to the legal department to review. We don’t have time for that. Wouldn’t it be great if we just take those licenses, run them through Luminance and just say green light, you can proceed.

Any identified risks and it has to go to the legal department. Or yellow light might mean it doesn’t have to go to legal, but it has to go to your VP for approval. Luminance can do as good a job as my paralegal can at identifying the risks.

The other day somebody came to me and said, have you got a feedback clause that does this sort of thing? And I’m going, yeah, I do but where is it? When did I do it? I think I did it about three or four-years ago.

Did I do it before COVID or did I do it after? And then I spend half an hour looking for it. Now I just say hey Lumi, pull up all my feedback clauses that I have written in the last five years.

If you give me an opportunity, I will think of something that I’m doing and I’ll say, why am I doing that? Why can’t Luminance do it?
