Luminance continues its expansion into India with signing of PSL

17 December 2020 |

17 December 2020 – This fall, Luminance, the leading artificial intelligence platform for the legal profession, announced the signing of PSL Advocates and Solicitors (‘PSL’), an award-winning full-service Indian law firm headquartered in New Delhi. The announcement comes as Luminance continues its expansion into the Indian legal market with three new leading customers in this region in 2020 alone.

PSL, whose dispute resolution practice is ranked in Tier 1 in The Legal 500, adopted Luminance’s Discovery platform to enhance arbitration and investigations. With over 110GB of data to review for a recent large-scale arbitration case, the firm decided it was impossible to manually review each and every document with the level of certainty that they needed for the case, without the possibility of human error. Through Luminance’s powerful search, data culling and filtering functionality, which enables lawyers to rapidly zero in on relevant information, PSL’s lawyers were able to reduce the document review time by 60% and estimated a staggering 100% increase in the team’s efficiency.

Furthermore, with many predicting a data protection act being introduced in India in the near future, similar to the likes of GDPR and the Data Protection Directive, PSL were looking for an advanced AI tool that can handle incoming data requests, which often involve large volumes of data and tight timeframes, as well as assistance with anticipated compliance reviews for the incoming regulation.

“The legal ecosystem in India is changing,” said Sameer Jain, Founder and Managing Partner of PSL. “Some courts are entirely paperless and require mandatory electronic filings, so the digitalisation of the courts and tribunals has undoubtedly spurred technology adoption amongst firms. We’re also starting to see more and more clients realise that technology can make processes more efficient, so we are happy to have found the most advanced tool on the market that can meet our document review needs while we continue to work remotely.”

Anant Gupta, Associate at PSL, added: “Before technology like Luminance, it was like looking for a needle in the haystack. For this arbitration case, in which we needed to search through over 10 email folders containing thousands of emails, it would simply have taken too long to do manually. Rather than spending countless hours and nights on document review, with Luminance’s next-generation search functionality, we could pull out the relevant documents and citations in seconds, which meant we could focus our resources on tasks that really made a difference to the client.”

Orianne Auger, Luminance’s Head of Discovery, said: “We’re delighted to welcome an innovative firm such as PSL to our customer base as Luminance expands its reach in the Indian legal market. PSL saw first-hand the power of Luminance’s next-generation machine learning functionality, ‘Deep Coding’, which builds an understanding of what is and what isn’t relevant in a data set to direct the legal team’s attention to the most important documents. We look forward to seeing the added efficiencies that Luminance Discovery can bring to the firm and the Indian market.”

Luminance’s Discovery platform applies a unique blend of machine learning algorithms to the process of investigations and litigation. The technology is currently deployed by over 250 customers in more than 50 countries and 80 languages worldwide. Luminance was recognised as a Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum and supports its growing customer base from offices in London, Cambridge, New York and Singapore.
